Colour, Identity, and Becoming: A Piece for Pride

Colour, Identity, and Becoming: A Piece for Pride

This piece feels different.

Not just visually, but emotionally.

It started with colour.

Bold, unapologetic colour.

A spectrum that refuses to be quiet.

And from that, the form began to take shape.

A dragon.

Fluid.

Moving.

Uncontained.

🌈 Colour as Identity

The rainbow is instantly recognisable.

But it is more than just colour.

It is identity.

Visibility.

Pride.

Every shade carries weight.

Every transition tells a story.

Not of sameness, but of difference.

Of individuality.

Of becoming who you are, even when it is not easy.

🐉 Why a Dragon?

Dragons in my work often represent power.

Control.

Presence.

But here, it is something more fluid.

Less rigid.

This dragon is not static.

It moves.

It bends.

It drips.

Almost like it is still forming.

Still evolving.

And that felt right.

🎨 The Process Behind It

Like most of my work, this started as a sketch on the iPad.

Loose.

Exploratory.

From there, it moved into Procreate and was built up in layers:

  • Mapping out the dragon’s flow and movement
  • Blocking in the colour spectrum to guide the piece
  • Refining the shape to keep it fluid and continuous
  • Adding the dripping effect to create motion and energy
  • Balancing saturation so each colour holds its own
  • Finishing with highlights and contrast to bring it forward

The drips were important.

They stop it feeling static.

They make it feel alive.

🧠 The Meaning Behind It

This piece is about identity.

About the courage it takes to be yourself.

Even when that feels difficult.

Even when it feels like you are still figuring it out.

Because identity is not always fixed.

Sometimes it shifts.

Sometimes it grows.

And that does not make it any less real.

🖤 A Personal Note

This piece is also personal.

I have a trans brother, and I could not be more proud of him.

Watching someone step into who they truly are takes strength.

More than most people realise.

This artwork is in honour of him.

And in honour of everyone who is fighting to be seen, heard, and accepted for who they are.

⚔️ Final Thought

Becoming yourself is not always easy.

But it is always worth it.

And no one should have to do it quietly.
