The Queen Between Worlds: Power, Balance, and the Dragons That Define Us

The Queen Between Worlds: Power, Balance, and the Dragons That Define Us

Some pieces feel like a moment.

This one feels like a story.

A world.

A role.

A presence that already existed before the illustration began.

👑 The Figure at the Centre

She doesn’t feel uncertain.

She doesn’t feel caught in conflict.

She feels established.

Crowned.

Grounded.

Certain of who she is.

There’s a quiet authority in her posture.

One hand resting.

The other lifted, almost casually.

Like she isn’t trying to prove anything.

She already knows.

🐉 The Dragons Behind Her

Behind her, two dragons twist together.

Red and gold.

Opposing, but connected.

They don’t feel like enemies.

They feel like forces.

Something she doesn’t fight…

but commands.

Or maybe something she has learned to live with.

To balance.

⚖️ A World Built on Duality

The composition itself reinforces that idea.

Vertical.

Structured.

Almost like a banner or a crest.

Above and below.

Light and dark.

Movement and stillness.

Everything feels intentional.

Like this isn’t just a character.

It’s a position.

🎨 How This Piece Came Together

This started, like most of my work, with a rough sketch on the iPad.

But this one needed more planning than usual.

Because it wasn’t just about a figure.

It was about the relationship between everything in the frame.

From there, it moved into Procreate and was built in layers:

  • Mapping the vertical composition first to keep everything aligned
  • Designing the dragons as flowing, interwoven forms
  • Placing the character in front to anchor the scene
  • Blocking colour early to separate foreground and background
  • Building in symbolic details like the crown and circular elements
  • Refining linework and shading to bring clarity and depth

This piece was about control.

Not just technically, but compositionally.

Everything needed to feel balanced without feeling static.

🧠 The Idea Behind It

This piece leans into ownership.

Not conflict.

Not confusion.

Ownership.

Of identity.

Of power.

Of the things that exist around you.

The dragons don’t overpower her.

They don’t distract from her.

They elevate her.

🖤 Strength Without Noise

There’s something quieter about this kind of strength.

It doesn’t shout.

It doesn’t need to.

It just exists.

Fully.

And that’s what makes it feel so solid.

⚔️ Final Thought

Power isn’t always about control over everything.

Sometimes…

it’s about knowing exactly where you stand within it.
